'DOWNALONG'
This charming design takes its name from the steep, traffic-free, cobbled street in Clovelly,
which tumbles past beautiful lime-washed cottages and is traditionally known as 'Down-a-long' by those who are at the top of the street, and 'Up-a-long' by those who are in the harbour.

A selection of beautiful hand-thrown pots A new glaze of blue, brown and rust combinations
Clovelly Pottery was first established in 1992 by Clive Pearson. It is a family run business in the heart of Clovelly just above the cobbled street. Clive is well known in the area for his beautiful hand thrown pots. He is a skilful thrower with over thirty five years of experience, training originally as a teacher at Bishop Otter College, Chichester, before starting a pottery in Welcombe, then Hartland.
All Clive's pots are produced next to his home in Clovelly and are hand stamped and dated.
Basket pots for plants Teapots too
On larger pieces Clive often scribes the weather conditions at the time of throwing. His keen eye on the weather relates to his other job as skipper of the Charter Boat, Jessica Hettie, running out of Clovelly to Lundy Island for diving, fishing and passenger service with the unique opportunity to swim with seals. Bookings can be made for Lundy Island trips at the pottery (April to October).
Also at Clovelly Pottery we are delighted to have our resident potter Caroline Curtis who produces hand thrown slip decorated earthenware pots in beautiful designs and colours. We also sell pottery from other local Devon and Cornish artists.
The workshop on the way to the centre of the village is open to visitors who may for a small fee and, subject to supervision, make their own pot (main holidays only).
The pottery is open most of the year, but during the summer months will usually open Monday to Saturday 10.30am to 5.30pm and Sundays 11.00am to 5.00pm. Winter hours will vary, please phone to check times if making a special journey. Please view our extensive selection of pots before descending the cobbled street, we are happy to look after any purchases until your return. If you return via a Landrover be sure to ask the driver to drop you at the "white railings" for the pottery. It is only a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre.
