The Red Lion Hotel
The Red Lion Hotel stands down on the quay alongside Clovelly’s ancient harbour. Rich in nautical atmosphere and beautifully furnished, it has become deservedly popular for North Devon holidays and seasonal short breaks.
The building dates back to the 18th century, and was created from three cider houses where Clovelly fishermen gathered to swap their tales of fabulous catches and perilous seas. The Red Lion was the birthplace of the sailor Salvation Yeo, a character in Charles Kingsley’s classic West Country novel "Westward Ho!"
Perfect for light snacks and lunches
The cosy Snug Bar and spacious Harbour Bar are highly popular with visitors who have made the long descent down the cobbles from the top of the village. Welcome light snacks and lunches are available, including fresh local seafood.
Fine dining in the Harbour Restaurant
Dining at the Red Lion is a memorable and enjoyable experience. The Harbour Restaurant has spectacular views across the harbour and into Bideford Bay. The chefs pride themselves on their creative menus, specifying local ingredients whenever possible, including game from the Clovelly Estate and fresh fish and seafood landed daily at the quay outside.
As part of the hotel’s wine list, there is a Devon Wine collection, which offers a choice of 15 highly palatable English wines sourced from Devon vineyards. They are very popular.
Stylish, beautifully appointed guest rooms
Each of the 11 guest rooms has an en-suite bathroom and enjoys either a sea or harbour view. All are beautifully decorated with a stylish nautical theme, reflecting Clovelly’s age-old maritime tradition.
The Sail Loft is a recent conversion of an adjacent grade II listed building and provides a further six comfortable and stylish bedrooms all overlooking Bideford Bay.
