History of Clovelly
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.

From the tip of Scotland to Cornwall, Clovelly has been assessed by property website, Bankrate https://www.bankrate.com/uk/ as the UK’s most picturesque and prettiest village in a rural location with the highest total of 134,353 hashtags on Instagram.
The runner-up spot was Portmeirion, North Wales, with 114,323 Instagram hashtags. This very picturesque village, created by the architect, Clough Williams Ellis, had been inspired by Clovelly when he designed the village.
Castle Combe, a village in the Cotswolds, Wiltshire, was ranked third with 99,641 hashtags.
There were other South West villages ranking highly too, such as Corfe Castle, Dorset, Polperro and Mousehole, Cornwall and Lynmouth, Devon.
