Clovelly Gig Row
Sat. 14 July to Sun. 15 July
Clovelly gig row sets off from Clovelly and is a race to Lundy island and back across 32 miles of open seas. Consequently is a huge test of endurance made only more difficult depending upon the weather and tides. The round trip takes up to four hours so as you can imagine we need your support for all there brave crews!
Leaving Clovelly at about 8am they plan to arrive on to Lundy at about 11am. They then stay over on Lundy, spending the evening sampling the hospitality of the Islanders. Leaving Lundy island the following day (somewhat groggy) arriving back at Clovelly at about 4 pm. This event is one of the highlights on their busy calendar.
Pilots, have, over the centuries rowed these speedy craft out to ships. Battling to be the first alongside to win the piloting jobs. In the 18th century they were also used, along this coast, as forerunners to our now well established RNLI.
