Charles Kingsley’s Bicentenary (1819-2019), held on 12-16 June, was very much appreciated.  It was mainly based on his famous novel, The Water Babies, published 1863, said to have been inspired by Clovelly.  The programme included plants and colour schemes, yarn-bombing displays, Kingsley Museum mural and story images, an actor, Bradley Brunsdon, telling stories of Kingsley’s life and his inspiration to write the novel, plus Become a Water Baby Art Trail, live music, […]

A Ray of Sunshine, by Stephen Perham

One of the most distinctive sounds of my childhood was the unmistakeable buzz of a ‘Seagull’ outboard engine.  Two local fishermen, Si Headon and his son Norman, ran boat trips in much the same way as I do today, but they used two 18ft picarooners “Sunrise” and “Sunshine”. Si and Norman worked every tide they could loading from the steps when the sea was high or using a wooden boarding […]

Britain in Bloom 2019, by Ellie Jarvis

Following on from their success in last year’s regional and national Britain in Bloom competitions, the Clovelly Community Gardening Group, headed by Su Maddocks, have extra special plans for their 2019 project.  They aim to fill the heart of the village with hundreds of beautiful flowers, with an emphasis on sustainable planting. Visitors to Clovelly Harbour, by Stephen Perham, Harbour Master

Harbour maintenance revealed a cannon The sleepy harbour of Clovelly occasionally receives the out of the ordinary visitor.  Fred Partridge and his swing shovel made a very welcome appearance early in the spring to help the Harbour Master replace some of the wooden piles that help protect both the Quay wall and the boats that lay alongside.  It is essential maintenance that we try and keep on top of every […]

‘Harbour Master Sailing Challenge’ by Stephen Perham, Clovelly Harbour Master

While on passage to Clovelly the yacht “Good Dog”, a Nauticat 34, overheard a vessel in trouble talking with the coastguard about the possible need for a lifeboat. Skipper Mark Ashley-Miller was in sight of the vessel so turned the “Good Dog” around and gave the vessel a tow to the safety of the harbour. Cannon discovered on Clovelly Harbour beach

Whilst replacing the posts in the harbour on 17th April with his brother, Stephen, Tommy Perham spotted something whilst the digger was digging holes for the posts.  When investigated, they discovered that it wasn’t a pipe, as initially thought, but in fact a cannon! When Tommy chipped away most of the rust, it was believed to date back to the 19th century. More information awaited.

Clovelly wins Landlord of the Year

Clovelly Estate is honoured and humbled to have been the outright WINNER of the Landlord/Housing Association Award.  This was presented at the Annual Award Ceremony at Filton, Bristol on 29th March. Cottages in the historic picturesque fishing village of Clovelly do not have the ”built in” thermal efficiency of modern homes.  To address this, Clovelly Estate embarked three years ago on a programme of retrofitting measures including draught proofing, loft insulation, sloping […]

Cliff descaling work

Following a fall of loose stones from the cliff on the back road near to the harbour at the end of July 2018, Clovelly Estate consulted its geotechnical experts. No imminent danger was foreseen, but it was recommended that the vegetation was removed.    Following that operation, it was recommended that as a precaution, 6′ stainless steel rock anchors should be drilled into the rock face and clad in chain […]
