History of Clovelly
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.

Best New Years Eve party ever!
31st December 2018. We like to celebrate our history and Clovelly has plenty of Pirates going back over the centuries. There will be pirates, gunpowder to illuminate the quay and a pirates table loaded with the spoils from their latest voyage. So come and celebrate another year’s passing, plus a disco to party away in to the New Year.
If you like dressing up join in, be a pirate, wench, publican. If you don’t like dressing up come and just soak up the atmosphere, you’ll find it a thrilling way to welcome in the new year in an atmospheric village setting.
