History of Clovelly
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.

All proceeds from St Austell, Greene King, Country Life Brewery sales in the Red Lion Clovelly Village on Sunday 1 August go to the RNLI! The Red Lion will be offering a paella and takeaway menu to enjoy on the quay.
The RNLI provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. It’s a cause that is very close to our hearts and that we see at close quarters in the Clovelly station.
Pop down for a cold drink in the sunshine, and help us raise money for such an important coastal charity. The tide will be out with lots of space for social distancing.
