History of Clovelly
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.

Upalong bar is named thus, because you come up along it! Hence this is the heart of the village at the New Inn. With relaxing surroundings, delicious home-cooked pub grub and a variety of real ales. Consequently you can sit with a pint and paper and soak up the sunshine whilst watching the world go by in the beer garden outside at the back of the Inn
The Manager, Bea, and her team love to treat their guests and regulars with their home cooking. Good honest food, sourced locally, that adds so much to the Inn’s ambience. The baking is also a real treat, with the smell drifting down the street from the inn and you can hear locals whispering “Bea’s baking” so quietly that you will wonder if this is a code that only villagers understand. Try a scone and you will understand why!
