History of Clovelly
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.

Lifeboat Weekend
August 3, 2024 @ 9:00 am - August 4, 2024 @ 5:00 pm
On Saturday there will be a 2-mile sponsored sea swim from Bucks Mills to Clovelly.
Sunday is a day full of family fun and action with games and entertainments, competitions, food and drink, music and lifeboat operational displays.
The Lifeboat House will be open and there’ll be an exciting rescue display in the afternoon by Clovelly’s volunteer lifeboat crew. So come along! You’ll love it.
