History of Clovelly
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.

Clovelly Silk specialises in hand-printed fabrics, beautiful scarves, including stunning devoré, and accessories. Thus you will find this family-run textile design and print workshop in the Lower Yard, next to the donkey stables, just below the Visitor Centre.
The shop offers special Clovelly designs made from the drawings for artist who have lived and worked in the village over the ages. They have many lovely, one off, more modern designs on offer. They also offer a bespoke curtain and blind making service.
Workshops, out of season, are a must and get very quickly booked. They teach textile design and silk printing along with many other associated crafts. However there is an even better way to take a special part of Clovelly and its history home with you. Taking something special with you, be it a scarf or a pair of curtains and bedspread will become treasured memories for years to come.
