“When you’ve got a bit more time than usual on your hands, it’s great to explore parts of the Westcountry that are slightly further afield.

Exeter is lucky to have good road and rail links to some of the South West’s most popular tourist destinations, which offer people the chance to see and do something different.”

“This picturesque, ancient fishing village near Bideford has no vehicular traffic, just donkeys and sledges. Its steep, cobbled street runs down to the harbour…”

“The insanely pretty seaside town that’s even better at Christmas than in the summer”…

Have you considered a winter staycation? Clovelly isn’t just a place to visit in the Summer months!

MyLondon writes:

“Clovelly lights up for its Christmas light event showcasing the unique beauty of the town and its stunning location.

The spectacular event sees festive carols sung by a church choir, and plenty of celebrations before the big light switch on.

Clovelly’s cobbled streets famous for donkeys and sledges in the summer months and one of its main attractions are illuminated with Christmas lights making for a magical walk down the hill to the harbour.

Donkeys used to be the only way to get up and down the steep streets of Clovelly, a pretty fishing village in Devon, southwest England.

Today, they still haven’t managed to bring cars in — it sits at the bottom of a 400-foot cliff. Instead, goods are transported by man-powered sledges — and if tourists can’t face the walk back up to the car park, they can grab a ride in a Land Rover instead.”

Make sure you don’t miss the turning on of our Christmas lights this year on Sunday 28th November. More info here.

Our very own Maha Rous show the Antiques Road Trip team around the area, illustrating Clovelly’s storied history as a fisherman’s village.

We highly recommend watching the full episode, which also visits neighbouring areas in North Devon.
